Where symbols work on Discord

Display names and server nicknames accept symbols and styled letters, up to 32 characters. Your username is stricter: it allows only lowercase letters, numbers, full stops and underscores, so symbols are refused there.

Channel names on a server can include symbols too, which is why many servers start each channel with a small marker such as ・ or ┊ before the name.

Markdown can change what you paste

Discord reads some characters as formatting. Single asterisks or underscores make text italic, double asterisks make it bold, double underscores underline it, double tildes strike it through and double vertical bars hide it as a spoiler.

If a combination you copy contains *, _, ~ or |, put a backslash in front of that character so it shows as written.

Check how it looks for others

Discord uses its own font and falls back to your device's fonts for anything that font lacks, so a rare symbol can look different, or show as an empty box, on a friend's phone. The simple shapes on this page, such as ★, ♡, ✦ and ➤, display on current Windows, macOS, Android and iOS.
