Where symbols work on Instagram

Your bio holds up to 150 characters and accepts symbols, emoji and styled letters. The name field, the bold line above your bio, accepts them too, and Instagram uses it in search, so keep your real name readable there.

Usernames are limited to letters, numbers, full stops and underscores, so symbols cannot go in the handle itself.

Make a bio easy to read

Use one or two symbols as bullets or separators rather than decorating every word. A pattern like ✦ photographer ✦ london ✦ prints is quick to scan. Putting each item on its own line helps too; if the app makes that awkward, write the bio in your notes app and paste it in.

Styled letters and search

Screen readers read styled letters such as 𝓈𝒸𝓇𝒾𝓅𝓉 one character at a time, or skip them, and Instagram search may not match them to the plain word. Keep the words people search for, like your profession or your city, in normal letters, and use styled text for a short accent.
