Using the right character
Many maths symbols have a lookalike on the keyboard: x for ×, - for −, <= for ≤. The real characters look better, and screen readers announce them correctly: × is read as times, while x is read as the letter.
Superscripts and fractions
Characters like ² and ³ are raised by design, so m² stays correct even where formatting is stripped, such as in a social media bio or a plain text email. The same goes for ½, ¼ and ¾, which are single characters rather than three.
When to use an equation editor
For anything longer than a line, an equation editor or LaTeX gives better results than individual symbols. The characters on this page are for quick notes, messages, spreadsheets and labels.
