Text hearts and emoji hearts
Text hearts such as ♥, ♡ and ❥ take the colour of your font and look the same in any app. Emoji hearts such as ❤️, 💕 and 🖤 are drawn in colour by your device, and their look changes between Apple, Google, Samsung and Windows.
Why ❤ sometimes turns red
The heavy heart ❤ can display either as a text symbol or as an emoji. Adding the invisible variation selector U+FE0F asks for the emoji version, and that is what the red heart emoji on this page contains. Without it, each app decides, which is why the same heart looks black in one place and red in another.
Choosing a colour
Heart colours have picked up their own meanings: red for love, pink for sweetness, purple for support, white for calm, and black for dark humour or grief. None of this is official, so use whatever suits your message.
