Copyright sign

U+00A9 · Latin-1 Supplement

Meaning and uses

The copyright sign, a C in a circle. It marks a creative work as protected, as in © 2026 Your Name. In most countries copyright applies without it, but it tells people who owns the work.

Unicode details

© is the Unicode character named COPYRIGHT SIGN, code point U+00A9, in the Latin-1 Supplement block. It was added in Unicode 1.1 in 1993, and Unicode classes it as a symbol (general category So).

It can also appear as an emoji, listed under the name “copyright”. Plain text is its default, but some apps draw it in colour anyway. Adding the invisible variation selector U+FE0F after it asks for the emoji style, and U+FE0E asks for plain text.
