How Alt codes work

Microsoft Support gives the method: hold down Alt and type the code on the numeric keypad, not on the row of numbers above the letters. If your keyboard needs Num Lock for the keypad to type numbers, turn it on first.

Codes come in two forms, and Microsoft Learn explains both. A code that starts with 0, such as 0176, picks a character from the Windows code page of your input language, which is code page 1252 for English (US). A code without the 0, such as 248, picks from the older OEM code page, 437 on US systems, which adds Greek letters, more maths signs and the box-drawing lines. That is why both 0176 and 248 type °. The tables here are built from Microsoft's published tables for those two code pages.

No numeric keypad

The number row does not work for Alt codes, so on most laptops you need another route. On Windows 11, press the Windows key and the full stop together, then choose Symbols in the panel that opens to browse punctuation, currency, maths and other signs. In Word, type a character's Unicode code and press Alt+X: 2192 followed by Alt+X gives →. In Excel and Google Sheets, =UNICHAR(8594) returns the same arrow.

Symbols with no Alt code

Alt codes only reach the characters in those two code pages. Stars ★, check marks ✓ and crosses ✗ are in neither, so they have no Alt code; each symbol page here lists the other ways to type its symbol. Start from all symbols, or see stars, arrows and maths symbols.

On a Mac, the Option key does the same job: see Option key symbols on a Mac.
