Micro sign

U+00B5 · Latin-1 Supplement

Meaning and uses

The micro sign, the SI prefix for one millionth. It appears in units such as µm (micrometre, a millionth of a metre), µg (microgram), µs (microsecond), µL (microlitre) and µF (microfarad), and on vitamin and medicine labels. It looks like the Greek small letter mu, μ, and Unicode lists the micro sign as a compatibility form of that letter, so some software converts one into the other. The micro sign is the one the Mac Option key and the Windows Alt code type.
