Omega

U+03A9 · Greek and Coptic

Meaning and uses

The Greek capital letter omega, the last letter of the Greek alphabet. In electronics it is the symbol for the ohm, the unit of electrical resistance, as in a 220 Ω resistor, with kΩ and MΩ for thousands and millions of ohms. Physicists use lower-case ω, a separate letter, for angular velocity. Unicode also has an ohm sign, U+2126, but defines it as equivalent to this omega, so text normalisation turns it into Ω, and the omega is the one to use. As the last letter, omega also stands for the end of something, as in alpha and omega.
