Diameter sign

U+2300 · Miscellaneous Technical

Meaning and uses

The diameter sign, a circle crossed by a slanted line. On technical drawings it goes before a size to show that the size is a diameter, as in ⌀12 mm for a 12 mm hole or shaft. The letter Ø and the empty set sign ∅ look much the same and often stand in for it because they are easier to type: Ø has the Windows Alt code 0216 and the Mac keys Option+Shift+O. In AutoCAD text, the control code %%c draws the diameter symbol.
