How the § codes work

In Bedrock Edition, a section sign followed by one character changes the text after it: §c turns it red, §l makes it bold and §r resets it to plain. Microsoft's reference for Bedrock lists where formatted text can appear: chat messages sent with /tellraw, titles, books, signs, item and entity names, world names and scoreboards.

Typing the section sign

Microsoft suggests holding Alt and typing 21 or 0167 on the numeric keypad, or copying § from a web page such as this one. On a Mac, Option+6 types it.

Beyond §f

Microsoft's table goes further than the sixteen classic colours. §g to §u add colours such as gold, warm and cool light grey, dark brown and dark teal, and it lists §v to §z as having no effect. The reference covers Bedrock Edition only, so test these codes in your own world if you play Java Edition.

If a symbol shows as a box

Minecraft draws text with its own font. If one of these symbols appears as a box or a question mark in your world, that font does not include it, so choose another.
